International English Testing System

This is an examination conducted by Cambridge University to grade an individual’s English language proficiency.

Candidates from Non English speaking countries, aspiring to go abroad, either for education or employment need to prove their English language proficiency by taking this test. IELTS scores are accepted globally as a marker of an individual’s English language proficiency These exams are conducted periodically all over the world in around 130 countries. In India , British Council and IDP Australia are conducting these examinations in various cities.

Candidate who are 16 years and above, with a valid passport can write this exam. There are two types – Academic and General. Students, Doctors ,Nurses and others in paramedical fields have to write the academic module. People looking for immigration and jobs abroad can write the General module. The scores for this test is given as band score and maximum score is 9 band in each component. There are four components to be done on the exam-Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. The requirement of band score will differ for each person according to their purpose of going abroad.

Registration to appear for the exam will be subject to availability of seats in the candidate’s preferred center. The dates for the exam are pre-determined. Candidate will have to pay fees of INR 10400/- towards examination fees.

Usually in India the exams are held on Saturdays and Sundays and the exam start time is 12 noon. This is because this exam is conducted globally and the timing is such that it is held at the same time the tests is held in other South Asian countries such as Singapore,Srilanka & Indonesia.

On completion of the four components of the test, the student will know the final band score within 14 days.
